The Freedom Machine, Company

he Freedom Machine was founded in April 1975 by Paul Chaleyer and James Byrne with the intention of selling only the highest quality bikes. At that time the only brands that the business sold were Raleigh, Gitane and Peugeot. The business was sold in 1978 to Trevor Spry who had it until 1988 when Adrian Curnow took over. The family company still owns the name and is a major shareholder in each of the stores. Freedom Machine went multi-store in 2003 with the opening of a second store in Chapel St. Prahran. Three of The Freedom Machine stores are located south of the Melbourne CBD in the thriving shopping strips of Bay St. Port Melbourne, Chapel St. Prahran and Church St. Brighton. All well noted for their restaurants, clothes shops and with an atmosphere all of their own. The fourth Freedom Machine to be set up will be in the heart of Williamstown and will be opened March 1st 2010 The Freedom Machine now sells Avanti, Giant, Specialized, Orbea, Trek and Look. Freedom Machine is a 100% Australian business with part of each store being owned by their respective management teams. The Freedom Machine also runs a Road and Mountain Bike team with some results listed below: Wes Bielski 96/97 World Veteran X-Country Champion, Mark Hastie Australian Veteran Road Champion 95/96 and Ben Meadley 4 x Victorian Track Titles from 1992 - 1995. Our team also held until recently the World unofficial 24 Hour Audax record of 770km.
